It all began sometime back in 1987, Tyranny were born out of the ashes of budding young rockers Driving Ambition. Driving Ambition had been practicing at Scalby School with older singer, Peter Roy Toole, guitarist Adam, other guitarist James, drummer Carl ( Bugs ), Andy, bass player and some other bloke on keyboards???, this hefty line up altered when Peter Roy Toole departed the venture and in came 17 yr old vocalist Simon Muir. The band lost the keyboardist and started constructing a whole new set of songs which incorporated touches if metal, rock and punk. Humorous and offensive came in the form of 'Fat Bastard', 'Grange Hill' was an odd dedication to the kid's TV drama, 'I want your Blood' was a concept by James and was every inch a tongue in cheek heavy rock parody. 'Lifeless' showed the band to be able to write some honest, decent tunes, it was a shame none of these tracks were ever recorded for poserity. The bands first gig was at Scalby Parish Hall, the gig embarrassingly engineered by none other than Bruce Dickinson of the Little Angels.

As time moved on Adam and Simon had started to get into the hardcore punk scene in Scarborough and had befriended other local bands where they then started to take their influences from, this meant the band were stretching in two different directions, hardcore punkon one side and a classic metal influence on the other. This push led to a support act at Scarborough's Salisbury Hotel with Weston Super Mare's thrash punk band Ripcord and Scarborough's hardcore trio, Satanic Malfunctions. Although this seemed quite an acheivement and the right direction for Adam and Simon, it wasn't for the others, the music had become thrashier and less melodic which displeased some members. On that fateful night, Andy, a wee lad at the time, as were most of the band was led away in disgrace by his parents!!!, a terrible ordeal for him, and for the band. It was after this that Tyranny disbanded.

James went on to form Young Blood, who inadvertantly looked and sounded like they had a song entitled 'Shes on top tonight' it says it all really!!. What happened to Andy who knows?, maybe banished from the world of rock forever by his Victorian parents!. I'm not sure what Carl did immediately after the split?, although he did play in a band called Tungsten Bear once!!!.

Adam and Simon decided to continue the Tyranny legacy, but changed their name to Rudiment. Rudiment were shortlived, playing a handful of gigs in Scarborough and not commnading a whole lot of attention. The group was a mismatch from the start, Adam and Simon were very much concerntrating on hardcore with a political slant, the other two members were a bassist called Chris, who always forgot the songs, and an ego mad drummer called Justin. The band rehearsed at the Salisbury Hotel but it was not enjoyable, the lyrics of the band were focusing on anti abortion, peace, vegetarianism and animal rights, with the music trying to sound more punk but with the other two members very much led by metal bands, the band called it a day.

Inspired by Active Minds, a two piece Hardcore punk band in the town, Adam and Simon decided that it was possible for just them to do it together and not bring on board anyone else, that meant there would be no musical differences and they could what they wanted. Upheaval were then formed, many tuneful and harder songs were written, 'American Succession' was a thrashy attack on the USA, 'Barbecue Humans' was a tuneful meat is murder type song, whilst 'Obey and Command' and the acoustic 'The End' focused on poverty and working class betrayal. Early in 1989, Adam and Simon recorded the demo 'Its No Laughing Matter', a bedroom demo affair of about 12 songs, some worked well and did so live, others bit the dust quickly as other tunes came in. Adam and Simon watched a lot of gigs in the forthcoming months in Leeds and in Bradford, taking snippets of influences all sorts of punk inspired bands.

What we really wanted was to release a single, Looney Tunes seemed interested but I don't think were convinced by us for one reason or another, we certainly woud have got good distribution had they have bit the bullet. We did play a few gigs during 1989, as a two piece we travelled all the way to Blackburn on the train with a drum kit in tow!!, we played at the town's Fusebox club, on the bill was Chumbawamba's Danbert Nobacon. We played a benefit gig in Leeds with a huge amount of other punk bands, at the height of the poll tax revolt we did a benefit gig in Scarborough with local bands and bands from afar, that was an interesting day.

As time went on we decided that we'd do our own single, self finance it, although we didn't realise that the dole money wouldn't stretch that far. On our travels we met anarcho punk character called Yan Tree in Leeds. We talked about the idea of doing a split single with Yan and over a period of a couple of months of talking about it we decided to do it. On reflection it did mean we reduced the costs by half, but on the other hand we blighted the sales of the single due to Yan's strange sounding folk music!. We didn't shift as many of these records as we wanted to our disapointment although making the single was a great idea and even now it can be seen been sold on the net as far as the USA and Poland!!!!!, how that happens I will never know!.

During the latter part of 1989, Adam and Simon grew weary of the two piece set up, it had been good but lacked any real depth and interest if the music was to diversify or change. Adam and Simon decided in 1990 to form Upheaval as a proper band, enlisting ex Tyranny drummer Carl ( Bugs ) and Jonny May on bass, for a time there was a second guitarist called Rich. The band practiced at Trinity Road for a while until it was obvious that Rich had to leave, a second guitarist was stifling the sound and thus Rich was duly dispatched. The four piece band continued and wrote some very good tunes, 'News' was left over from the 2 piece stuff, and new tracks like 'Relics Uphold The Past' and 'Furnished In The Secrets Of The Mind' saw the band depart the harsh punk sound in favour of a U2, goth pop rock style, although the politics within the lyrics were still been conveyed.

LA Girl gives us a glimpse of their impression they surely made on many early hardcore bands, whereas Kids of The Black Hole is 5 and half minutes of punk alternative craftsmanship that has never been equalled in my opinion.

A fucking awesome album, if you haven't heard it I advise you to check it out.

Yes, Napalm Death, the classic hardcore punk band, that unfortunately turned into a death metal band...oh well, undoubtedly their 'Scum' album will go down in history, the amount of short songs blurting senselessly is just crazy...but no more ridiculous and enjoyable than 'You Suffer'. If you have never heard it, listen to it now!!, it won't take long!!!

I have always been a great fan of Manic St Preachers and in recent years they have matured like a bloody good cheese. Their last outing was a splendid colelction of ditties which I thought was the best album of 2004.

When I heard earlier in the year that Bradfield himself was to release a solo album I thought that would be an interestign concept, maybe I thought he would let rip into a new style, away from the Manics...

I was wrong, and I am so glad I was, the album is a Manics album, whichever way you look at it, I mean it is James Dean himself who is the heart of the band, songwriter, musician etc, so he is just doing what he knows best, writing fucking good songs.

The album is a bit of a gem, it begins with the first single lifted, Thats no way to tell a lie, which is a classic, its Bradfield at his best, coupled with a chorus backing reminescent of Joy Division / New order.

Bad boys and painkillers is by far the highlight of this great debut, its elegant and dramatic pop, the vocals and backing are exqusite.

Still a long way to go is a diamond track, its a mature song with strength in its arrangement and shows how much Bradfield has beautiful songwriting off to a tee.

There is an acosutic guitar/vocal only on this called To see a friend in tears which is just superb, the vocals are crystal and the sentiment heartfelt.

I admired the Manics for writing great songs that also carried a message, but it seems Bradfield hs shyed away from that, both on this and the last Manic album. Instead he has kept his talent for writing great melodies but has kept the subject matter more personal and perhaps more human.

Magic.

Marks out of 10: 9

Remember him???, you don't?, oh come on, he was on TOTP with his curly mullett singing about slow boats and getting his washing clean...yeah, it was a shit lyric ( full lyrics below ), aswell as the mullett he looked like a little midget fella, in the same vein as the thin Chuckle Brother...Barry??.

Enuff said, especially as recently the song has been used on telly on an advert, anyone notice that...ouch!

Heres the words.....

Last night I had the strangest dream
I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry clean
Didn't want no one to hold you, what does that mean? And you said...

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running in a one touch ground, oh no
I got to keep on moving

You're on the road and now you pray you'll last
The road behind was rocky
But now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you see your past
Is that the reason why you're running so fast? And she said...

{chorus}

Never let another girl like you whip me over
Never let another girl like you drag me under
If I meet another girl like you I will tell her
Never want another girl like you have to say - oh!

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running in a one touch ground, oh no
I got to keep on moving

If you din't like the Smiths you are one of these things: a tossbag, fuckwit, knobhead, wanker...get the picture?????.

The Smiths were, and still are, one of the most important and influential bands in the last 30 years. Why people bleat on about the Beatles having any musical impact on others....i cant answer that myself really, i just hate the beatles.

Morrissey, odd ball, yes, genius..almost definitely. His choice of lyrics absorbing, amusing, never ever dull, thought provoking, controversial, original overall. His mood and image foppish, camp, retarded and yest sophiticated, strangely interesting and guarded.

Johnny Marr, a complete and utter legend of a guitar player, you dont have to play the guitar with your teeth to be a genius, jimi hendrix did and he karked it, oh , and he was fucking shit!.

My fave Smiths songs follows:

1. What difference does it make?
2. Girl Afriad
3. How soon is now?
4. Still Ill
5. Stop me if you've heard this one before
6. Reel around the fountain
7.Back to the old house
8. Suffer little children
9. There is a light that will never go out
10. Half a person

I could bang on all night about The Smiths, I won't, I know you have beds to go to

2 u2 things in one day...mmmm, but Boy is a wonderful album. I Will Follow starts proceedings energetically, the whole album follows in a raw, unadulatered way which in some ways October never captures as the pace on that album ebbs and flows, but Boy has it all.

The faster numbers, Stories For Boys, Out Of Control, A day without me and Electric Co are superbly paced and show U2 at their youthful best, a time when stadium rock must have seemed light years away for them.

The pumping Twilight and Another Time, Another Place fit so right, its an album that is very hard to have a go at, why should I?, its a great record.

Whats On Yor Mind, when you listen to it now sounds like it should have been released in 83 or 84, but it was much later, 88, when it was released.

It possesses those classic emulator moments and vocals that sound like a junior Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17. The drums are overpowering and over the top, the effects on the 7 and a half minute version I have are much too much, cheesy, but that was the 80's, it fits don't it?.

A forgotten gem, download it when you have time.

Wikipedia info follows::::

Information Society (also known as InSoc) is a U.S. band originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, primarily consisting of Kurt Larson (aka Kurt Valaquen/Kurt Harland), Paul Robb, and James Cassidy; the latter two reconvened the band in 2006. Their breakout hit was 1988's "What's On Your Mind? (Pure Energy)", a dance hit which included a sample of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) from Star Trek, saying "pure energy," and opened with a sample of Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), also from Star Trek, saying, "It's worked so far, but we're not out yet!"

Man, what a heavy gig, Bristol's finest hardcore trio, Ripcord headlining at The Salisbury in Scarborough, supported by the very non punk looking and death metal sounding Satanic Malfunctions, and also supported by the thrashy punk crossover youngsters Tyranny it sure was a night of pain.

The year?, 1988, many moons past.....my band of course were Tyranny, my how we have changed!!!!, back then it was army trousers, converse boots, denim jacket and button badges....yeaaaaahhh!!!!!.

What can you say about this 3rd album by the then Glasgow post punk band??. I Travel is like some skewed electric disco, where Today I Died Again is Banshee-esque and hints of early goth. Theres oddities on this too, Constantinople Line is wierd aswell as out of place on this album, it would have been well positioned on the previous albu, Real to Reel etc..

I don't think the band were clear what direction they needed to take at this point, punk had died out, they werent full on doom and gloom and they never looked like taking a mellow stab at new wave pop, well not until New Gold Dream in 82.

Nethertheless a great album which stands the test of time even now, 26 years on!!!!!

Nobody can deny that The Misfits have influenced some funny bands downt he years, their rocky punk blend of all things strangely sinister and macarbe is legendary, vampire nonsense and pure silliness prevail, which makes them very likeable really.

My fave song by them is of course Last Caress, its a very odd lyric, extremely tasteless and mixes weedy punk rock guitar with an out of place vocal....one of punk / rocks strange moments!.

Check out too, We are 138 and Return of the Fly....not genius classics but love em all the same!

All that Sex Pistols and The Clash shit you can shove, cos this album is where punk was at, ok Siouxsie was part of that little band of tossers with the Pistols but after that they not only did a good couple of punk / post punk albums they became one of the best Goth bands this country has ever witnessed.

The Scream is a joy to behold, its raw, off balance, chaotic at times, savagely crass and even the goth was there then ( overground ), Nictotine Stain and Metal Postcard whine and glide as Siouxsie yelps her vocals and the guitars strain behind her.

The Scream is a classic punk album never applauded in those crap Top 100 nosebleed moment TV shows on the tiresome digital channels. Its not rock n roll like the Ramones, its not white blokes doing Reggae like The Clash, its not a made up band like the Pistols. Its unadultered angst and its fucking smashing!!
